Beginners Roof Cleaning Equipment: All You Need for under £2000

Daniel Dennett • 28 November 2023

Are you eager to jump into the world of roof cleaning but uncertain about the gear you need? Join me as I unpack the essential tools you'll need for a typical day in roof cleaning using the "Scraping" method that can be used in the UK.

This method suits nearly all roof types and will get your roof in the door when it comes to offering roof cleaning.

You're in luck if you currently offer window cleaning because the chances are you'll already have alot of the equipment you need to tackle the job.

But if you're brand new to the business, don't worry! I'll give you a run down of the equipment you'll need for under £2000.

1. Protective PPE for Roof Cleaning

When it comes to handling chemicals and biocides, protection is crucial. During the mixing of chemical ensure you are wearing resistant clothing. Eye protection and have an eye wash kit on your van incase of accidental splashing.

Cost: £30.00

2. Gloves & Safety Mask Needed for Softwashing

Invest in sturdy gloves to protect your hands while mixing chemicals and for when working on roofs choosing nitrile gloves for handling chemicals; they're cost-effective and disposable after each job.

When softwashing you'll need a respirator fitted with ABEC 1 filters is a must for safeguarding against chemical inhalation.

Cost: £60

3. Roof Scraper Blades & Attachments

Scraping is the cheapest way into the roof cleaning business. There are a number of different suppliers of “roof Scraper Blades and brushes” Our Favorite are from Mashal Pro. Your tool you will need is a double scraper head and a set of scraper profiles suitable for different roof tile types.

Cost £244.00

4. Roof Soft Washing Equipment

Because we're on a budget. Its not the fastest way but for soft washing, you can work your way into the business using a small battery powered back pack from a company such as Gardiner pole systems who also sell high quality water fed poles.

Depending on your preferred method, you can manually mix a biocide chemical and apply this with your water fed pole brushed onto a roof. These tools allow precise cleaning and application of cleaning solutions.

Regarding pole lengths, you will need a pole 30ft and longer to suit most roofs and can vary in price based on brand and specifications.

Low budget cost £380

High budget cost £800

5. Ladder Equipment & Safety Gear

Working on ladders demands safety precautions. Ladder standoff, ladder mate stabilisers, and heavy-duty rubber mats enhance ladder stability and safety.

If you need to mount the roof ensure you also purchase ladder hooks for securing the ladder on the ridge tiles.

To save your cash in the mean time, consider hiring a mobile scaffold tower from a company such as HSS hire in the UK for a little as £120 for 1 day. This is safer than working from ladder which is not recommended for long periods of time.

Cost £120.00

(Not including cost of a ladder)

Getting started in the roof cleaning business on a budget.

Now, let's talk budget. Contrary to popular belief, setting up your roof cleaning kit doesn't have to break the bank. And many people getting into the business might have some of this equipment to begin with.

The equipment showcased here can be acquired for around £1000 or less, depending on your shopping prowess.

By meticulously selecting reliable but reasonably priced gear, you can assemble a comprehensive kit without exceeding £2000, making it accessible for those starting in the business.

Final thought on roof cleaning equipment

Starting a roof cleaning venture in the UK requires the right tools and safety measures. With a well-organised setup including protective gear, versatile cleaning tools, soft washing equipment, and ladder safety gear, you're poised to embark on this rewarding journey without overspending.

As you progress, you may want to add new equipment and a secondary pole and even your own mobile scaffolding tower rather than having to hire one.

However, this breakdown covers the core essentials just to get you into the business at the lowest cost possible
